Richard Hutten Studio was established in 1991. Since then the company has become one of the most successful and influential companies in the field of design. It provides consultancy and art direction for companies mainly of furniture and other interior and lifestyle products. Expert in sustainable and circular design, the company advises in the whole product chain. Clients are mainly from Europe and Asia, including Muji, Moroso, Ghidini 1961, Lensvelt, Artifort, Gispen, Skultuna, Offecct, and Qeeboo. Its Dombo mug for Gispen sold over one million pieces worldwide.

Richard Hutten has been the guest of honour and curator of many international design events, in places such as Shanghai, Shenzhen, Poland, New York and his home country The Netherlands. Works by the studio is part of the permanent design collection of over 50 museums worldwide, including the MoMA in New York, Victoria & Albert Museum in London and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

Richard Hutten is expert in sustainability and circular design, and that he completes his work based on the principles of the circular economy. His award-winning design of the airport seating system for Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands is a good example. The seating is made of recycled materials, and it is easy to repair and maintain.  It is plastic-free and locally produced. The carbon footprint of this design is about 90% lower than comparable designs in the market.
