Studio MTX, launched by Atelier Montex in 2013, marks a significant expansion of the company's traditional expertise into the realm of interior design. By transitioning embroidery from fashion to space, Studio MTX has developed its unique vocabulary that transforms conventional embroidery materials into innovative design elements. Threads evolve into cables, and sequins into laser-cut aluminium modules, creating a new savoir-faire that integrates techniques from diverse applied arts such as embroidery, weaving, tapestry, and leatherwork. The Studio's work includes striking features like walls of ribbons interspersed with brushed brass, and screens that capture the tense interplay between metal and silk.
Since 2017, under the artistic direction of Mathieu Bassée, Studio MTX has been characterised by modular constructions and intricate geometry. The precision of the materials used underscores the strength of the compositions, establishing a novel path in CHANEL’s Métiers d’Art by employing digital and serial design tools alongside nearly entirely handmade creations.
Atelier Montex, founded in Paris in 1945 by Jacques Lemonier, initially focused on crafting embroidered fabrics by metre for Parisian fashion houses. The early 1980s witnessed a transformative period with the arrival of Annie Trussart, who introduced an eclectic and innovative vision that redefined the company’s identity. This evolution led to collaborations with major fashion names throughout the 1990s, making Atelier Montex a prestigious partner in haute couture. The company's integration into CHANEL’s Métiers d’Art in 2011, and its recognition as an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) in 2013, further solidified its reputation.
