Rooted in history, Scandinavian Design is influenced by its environment. Sustainable living is a core part of their DNA and reflects in Scandinavian Design principles.

Based in Denmark, Normann Copenhagen is well-known for its approach to environmentally-conscious design, from carefully sourced materials, ergonomic furniture designs, limited packaging, and everything in between, sustainability has become a cornerstone of the brand. In fact,  it has been making waves in the interior design world since its inception in 1999. With their focus on sustainable design that acknowledges tradition while striving for innovation, it’s safe to say that Normann Copenhagen is only going to continue to grow.

Poul Madsen, co-founder, explains how design and sustainability go hand-in-hand with Normann Copenhagen, and what it means for the future of the industry.

Normann Copenhagen furniture is innovative yet classic. What elements do you think helps to achieve this goal?

We’re always looking to the future, challenging conventional materials, processes and technologies in terms of design. It is important for us that our products are made from environmentally-conscious materials and that our designs have an aesthetic that will stay relevant for generations. This is in line with our belief that longevity is at the core of sustainable design. In addition to our in-house design team, we collaborate with designers from all over the world. So, the inspiration for each design is different and unique.

The brand has dabbled in the sustainability field for a few years already. Were there any inclinations, experiences or realizations in particular that led you into this field?

As a leading design company, we are very aware of our role in helping create a greener future. Our sustainability journey is ongoing, so we’re constantly learning along the way, and are committed to continuously evaluating the impact our organization has on the environment. I don’t think anyone can dispute the importance of sustainability – it is a key to creating relevant and long-lasting designs.

This involves careful selection of durable, high-quality and sustainable materials as well as creating designs that will stay relevant for generations. I think it’s essential to consider sustainability when creating new designs. It’s indisputably something that has gained vast awareness in recent years due to the incredible political and media focus. We all share a responsibility in terms of minimizing our environmental footprint to help ensure a greener future.

We know that you work very closely with designers and manufacturers to achieve this goal, what’s the most important learning you can share on your journey?

We have learnt that it’s important to constantly seek new, better alternatives. Greener methods and materials are being developed continuously, and new technology introduces better, more sustainable production methods. It’s an ongoing journey, and we are committed to staying up to date in order to reevaluate ourselves and implement more sustainable processes in our organization.

Apart from sustainable design, do you think any trend will affect the industry?

I think the global pandemic has created a shift in the way people work. More people will likely start working from home, which will probably increase the demand of home office furnishings. I think this will be an increasing trend in the furniture industry.

Normann Copenhagen have learnt that it’s important to constantly seek new, better alternatives. Greener methods and materials are being developed continuously, and new technology introduces better, more sustainable production methods.

Normann Copenhagen has also expanded its stores and concepts globally, now featuring flagship stores in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, allowing more people to experience the brand first-hand.
